2021 R.I.C.E. Awards to be Presented Virtually

Recognizing inclusion, culture and excellence awards to notables throughout the Lowcountry Region.

CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA – The Lowcountry Rice Culture Project announces that eight (8) notable Lowcountry community icons will be honored for their longtime support and partnerships, as well as their personal and professional achievements and accomplishments on behalf of the citizens in the region.

The following individuals have been chosen to receive the R.I.C.E. Award by the Lowcountry Rice Culture Project: Angela Mack, executive director and chief curator for the Gibbes Museum of Art; Michiel Perry, digital lifestyle editor of Black Southern Belle; Nigel Redden, General Director, Spoleto Festival USA; Rita Scott, retired vice president and general manager of Live 5; William Starrett, Artistic and Executive Director and Principal Choreographer, Columbia City Ballet; The Venerable Calhoun (Callie)Walpole, Vicar and Subdean, Grace Church Cathedral; Dr. Dwaun J. Warmack, President, Claflin University; and Charlotte Ascue Jenkins Williams, renowned Lowcountry chef and cookbook authors.

“We are absolutely thrilled to honor these individuals because of their long history of inclusive support to community life, culture and pursuit of excellence in the Lowcountry”, stated renowned international artist, Jonathan Green, founder and president of the Lowcountry Rice Culture Project. “Unfortunately, we could not honor or recognize everyone we have collaborated with over the years in the Lowcountry, therefore, the committee had a challenging time making these selections”.

Dr. Kim Cliett Long, event chairperson and executive director of the Lowcountry Rice Culture Project added, “We are ecstatic to present these awards at our virtual ceremony. Each of these individuals certainly exemplify   longevity   and   excellence   on   their   watch   in   their various occupations, business and community endeavors as well as loyalty and dedication to preserving the art, history, education and culture of the Lowcountry.”

About The Lowcountry Rice Culture Project

The purpose of this project is to serve as a clearing house and partnership builder for activities that explore, reveal, and reclaim the shared cultural inheritance of the southeastern Lowcountry rice industry as a basis for promoting community development and advancing the cause of human dignity. An emphasis of this organization is to examine the consequences of history and the meaning of heritage, as they are manifested in human interaction, through oral history projects, and other research and educational initiatives.
